How often do I need my chimney sweeping?

The sweeping frequencies below are for guidance. Frequency will depend on a number of factors including: type of fuel, appliance used, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, type of chimney. Your Guild sweep will be able to advise on sweeping frequency during the appointment, the sweeping frequencies below are for guidance.

 

 Smokeless fuel:        At least once a year        
 Wood:  Quarterly when in use
 Bituminous coal:  Quarterly when in use
 Oil:  Once a year
 Gas:  Once a year
What if my chimney has a liner?

If your chimney has a liner installed Steve will us a Viper – a specialist brush that will negotiate a flexi liner or any other type of chimney liner. There are many different types of flue liners for various appliances and Steve carries a full set of different types of brush to go up the flue pipe.

Does the sweeping leave any mess?

No, not at all. The appliance will be sealed up with foam blocks or a dust sheet. We also place dust sheets on the floor in the area in which we are working.

Can I have a fire the night before?

Yes. As long as all hot ash and debris is removed before the chimney sweep arrives. Gas and oil appliances need switching off 24 hours prior to your appointment.

Do you sweep gas fires?

Yes, but you will need the appliance removed by an approved Gas Safe contractor prior to sweeping and then replaced by the approved contractor.

What should I do to prior to the chimney sweep arriving?

It is advised that you clear the area around the fireplace and remove any valuable/breakable items to give the sweep a safe area to work in.

I rent my property, whose responsibility is it to get the chimney swept?

It is the landlords responsibility to make sure the appliance is swept and serviced regularly.
